Gelato

Gelato; the first Italian word I learned and a word that people are familiar with from around the world. There is a small gelato shop where I am from in Rochester, New York, and plenty of grocery stores that sell it in big containers, but, nothing compares to authentic gelato made right in Italy.

I had the pleasure of attending the Gelato Festival in Florence and had the opportunity of tasting 19 different flavors of gelato. The flavors ranged from a standard hazelnut to an exotic tropical basil. My favorite flavor was #13 which was a  gelato made with only 3 ingredients: milk, rice and honey and it tasted just like a creamy vanilla. The flavor that stuck out the most to me was at booth #15. It was strawberry and red pepper. It was the perfect blend of both ingredients and each bite was different- sometimes I could taste a strong sense of strawberry and sometimes I tasted just the red pepper. I would have never thought that these 2 ingredients would make a good pair in anything, especially gelato.

Vincenzo Lenci is the creator of this flavor and uses his “why not?” attitude in every day life and while he is experimenting with creating new gelato flavors. Vincenzo Lenci always tries new combinations in order to experiment and figure out the best way to harmonize different elements into one unique, refreshing taste.
